RECENT EVENTS COVERED

Pandemonium
by Marilyn R. Wilson
Photography by Wayne Mah

The Heritage Hall on Main Street opened it's doors in June to the Fashion Business grad students from John Casablancas. Titled Pandemonium, the event was a salute to the cult side of fashion a la Tim Burton - "One person's craziness is another person's reality". The 18 graduating students handled all areas of production including: styling, media, music, sponsorship, promotion, staging, and models. The end result was a very creative presentation of the darker side of fashion - Victorian, Romantic and Goth all rolled into one.

Emceed by Vancouver Fashion eZine's own Steely Springham, the evening opened with lots of mingling, drinks and the chance to purchase raffle tickets. When it was time for the show, the tone was set by an unusual life-size skeleton puppet performance by Darryl Singh. Then models with dark make-up walked the runway to moody music spun by DJ Spicy California Roll. Clothing for the show was provided by Myexcloset, Armaan, Privilege, body politic, Mela, Art of Adornment, Amanda Quesnel and Regards. Proceeds from the evening went to benefit the Covenant House, a privately funded charity which provides support for young people in need.

LuvNGrace/Masik Malene Grotrian Red Carpet
by Marilyn R. Wilson
Photography by Norm Lee

For their June Red Carpet event, LuvNGrace & Masik changed things up at Studio 538 by creating a exciting new layout. There was still a lot of room for the usual net-working, but the room also held a red carpet runway with low couches for VIP's in the front and a row of bar height chairs behind so everyone had a great view.

The evening was hosted by Meena Mann of FMA Entertainment Weekly with DJ Daniella Evangelista spinning the tunes. Walls were hung with great selection of original pop art paintings for guests to peruse created by local artist Jim Cummins. At the head of the runway, a large video screen showcased a non-stop kaleidoscope of fashion images that kept us entertained as we mixed and mingled. Then it was time for the main event - a celebrity-style couture fashion show by designer Malene Grotrian. A video of her successful debut in New York Fashion Week set the scene and then the models began to work the runway. We were treated to a mix of high-end evening wear in both long and short lengths: dresses, corsets, draped skirts and hooded wraps. Vibrant colours alternated with muted shades, a few striking prints and the ever popular black. Shoes and handbags were provided by Maria Brasil, a new line launching in September. The evening continued on into the wee hours at an Studio 54/Andy Warhol themed after party with pop artist Jim Cummins in attendance.
