Health & Beauty Expo 2009
By Kristi Carignan

Vancouver's first annual Health and Beauty Expo, held at the new Convention Centre, Canada Place West May 8th-10th promoted health, beauty and lifestyle with over 350 exhibitors and booths under a 90,000 square foot roof. The Expo showcased a wide range of new and exciting health and beauty products, from diet and wellness, to Chinese medicines, to gym and fitness accessories. If you live and breathe the Expo's mantra of "Be Healthy, Be Beautiful, Be Happy and Have Fun in Life!," then this was the event for you.

This three-day affair, organized by Jam Expo Inc., included fashion shows from both local and international apparel and footwear designers, as well as seminars and demonstrations on upcoming trends in hair, jewellery, and makeup. Oriental and ethnic food presentations were held at the Healthy and Smart Cooking Corner, an insightful Speaker's Corner was set up which provided information and educational material on products and services related to health, beauty and lifestyle, and my personal favourite, the very popular Pampering Zone which offered mini-spa services such as pedicures.

This year's Expo also featured the Miss Vancouver 2009 pageant, a first for any Health and Beauty Expo in Canada. The winner of this year's pageant walked away with an appearance on the magazine cover for the 2010 Health and Beauty Expo, the opportunity to compete in the Miss Canada 2010 competition, and a cash prize of $5,000. But the generosity didn't stop there. A portion of all ticket and booth sales went to two notable charities, the Awaaz Orphan Foundation, an organization committed to helping orphans around the world, and our very own Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. All in all, a successful event which will surely be another hit next year.

JK Models Official Launch Party
by Lisa Wong

The JK Models Agency held its official launch party at Blushing Boutique on Thursday May 21. The event was well-attended by local media personnel and fashion industry insiders who sipped on wine, mingled, and browsed. Guests were also invited to bid on the silent auction, which featured many great items such as health and fitness gift certificates, artwork by artist James Picard, and clothing and jewelry by DESIGN + CONQUER, Malene Grotrian, Genevieve Graham (of Project Runway Canada fame), and Innergypsy Designs, just to name a few. All proceeds from the silent auction, as well as partial proceeds from the sales of Blushing apparel that night, benefited the Looking Glass Foundation, a non-profit organization seeking to provide intensive treatment to those suffering from eating disorders in B.C.

Hostess and JK Models founder Jennifer Sharon spoke halfway through the evening, thanking her sponsors and explaining the philosophy behind her agency. Unlike other agencies, JK Models has no restrictions on height, weight, and ethnicity and promotes diversity and representation of all body types. A tearoom-style fashion show featuring the latest spring/summer dresses and evening wear available at Blushing followed shortly after and capped off a very successful evening. Congratulations to Jennifer Sharon on this new and very positive venture.

Bomba Launch
by Lisa Wong

Bomba Collection held its Vancouver launch party on May 17th at Mint Lounge in collaboration with local events and media company Strawberry Nights. Guests and long weekend revelers nibbled on trays of delectable chocolate-dipped strawberries as they mingled and sipped on drinks. The crowd was well-assembled and waiting with delicious anticipation by the time 11:30 rolled around and the mini fashion show began.

Based in Montreal, Bomba Collection is a fairly new luxury high-end streetwear label designed by Jesse Hendricks. The capsule collection presented at Mint featured tunic-length tops that could be paired with leggings or skinny jeans or worn alone as mini dresses. Each piece was screened with glam rock-inspired graphics and cheeky pop music phrases such as "I wear my sunglasses at night" and, in a nod to Rihanna, "Please don't stop the music." Bomba is currently available at Riot in Vancouver.

Babelicious! - The ultimate girls night out
By Alicia-Rae Light

More than 200 ladies, young and old, were luxuriously pampered from 8-11 on May 7 at Caprice Nightclub on Granville Street for a ladies-only event, Babelicious, followed by the main part of the evening titled 'the after party' where the gentlemen were free to join in on the fun featuring two fashion shows hosted by Juicy Communications and WakeUp! Vancouver Promotions & Entertainment.

Each female guest received a complimentary beauty service of her choice upon arrival including intricate manicures with jewel details by Soulful Indulgence, hair styling, make-up application, tarot car reading and massages leaving everyone feeling glamorous for the rest of the evening to come. The fabulous late-night event was MC'd by Tasha E productions, with shows including the debut line of Anelore Designs by Anelore Popa as well as garments from NRT Fashion by Nicole Tomney.

In between beauty services and the fashion shows, the ladies had the chance to shop for sizzling sex toys by Sex Ed with a Twist and browse through some sexy lingerie by Queen Diva Lingerie, as well as taste delicious samples of Youth Juice, of the event's sponsors. One of the only males in the room turned to me and said, "I've never seen anything like this, there are so many women here!"

DJ Johnny Jover spun house, electro, and top 40 beats throughout the evening and Anelore Design's bright and playful dresses were walked down the runway at midnight by Vancouver's favorite models. Many of the garments featured colourful, silk floral prints. A bright yellow and pink floor-length dress with a purple sequined sweetheart top worn by Vancouver model Alicia Crudo stood out looking like a goddess. Anelore's high-end bikini and swimsuit line followed the stunning dresses, also full of bright colours, ruffles, bold floral prints and classic cuts.

NRT Fashion featured short high-waisted cocktail dresses, many black and white simple dresses, and some red hounds tooth sweetheart top tube dresses. Standing out was a navy and white racer back dress, and another similar with gold button details. The line was very classic and pretty with a bit of a twist thrown in with a few of the dresses having leopard print fabric detail.

The evening was a great success thanks to the wonderful producers and all the sponsors including Dermalogica, hair by Tech 1 Hair Design & Esthetic, and make-up by New Image College of Fine Arts.
