Attitude is Everything
By Brenna Temple
"Every collection I do is very sophisticated-glamourous, but with a lot of attitude. I want women to feel empowered, that dressing glamourous is effortless." Vancouverites, brace yourself for the femme fatale feel of Carlie Wong's spring and fall collections.
Success hit hard after Wong graduated from Kwantlen's fashion design program. Since then she debuted on Project Runway and worked as an assistant designer for chic lines like Kensie and Mac & Jac. But what's really cool is Wong's wide array of funny quirks along with her honest but edgy attitude. This includes the fact that she hasn't slipped on a pair of jeans since '97 and she's completely obsessed with leggings and black in general. "I've caught the leggings bug," laughed Wong. "I can't get rid of it."
Wong's upcoming fall collection is taking a pivotal turn with edgy changes, yet it still meets her goal of providing a constant luxury look. "It's a younger version of what I normally do. It's a little seventies inspired, a little bit Latin inspired, a little bit rock n' roll inspired, but relaxed," said Wong. Compared to her past collections with an emphasis on dresses, women on the Wong clothing hunt "can look forward to cool pieces" since "the fall collection is a bit more mixed." That's definitely the feel you'd get with a sneak peak of what she's putting together right now. If you're feeling doubt, then you should see the "vest with a unitard" that she's currently creating. Women who want to wear something fun can also look forward to the wide array of sheer tops, sequinned black leggings, rouched tight pants and metallic swanky dresses that create an edgy look you can throw on in minutes.
If you're already getting anxious to get a look at Wong's fall collection, just make sure you don't miss out on her current spring collection that's already gracing local stores. In it you'll be able to find colours from greyish-blue to solid black and whites and sultry, sexy dresses with edge. You might like to consider the one shouldered blue dress, the high-waisted skirts that are reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn with a business woman twist and high-end frilly, fun and flirty dresses that could make anyone feel seriously hot.
