Some people know exactly what they want to be when they grow up. Others have passions and talents within that slowly come forth by being in the right place or meeting the right person at the right time. When Chad Taylor was studying Biology at Simon Fraser University he didn't necessarily know that he'd be better suited with scissors in his hand than a microscope. But a positive experience at Moods Hair Salon got the wheels turning and he knew that there was something of interest to him in hair styling.

Taylor's initial visit to Moods was upon the recommendation of a friend. "My stylist gave me this amazing hair cut. It was the first time I walked away feeling really good about my hair." Inspired by this experience and the creative aspects of the industry, Taylor switched from Biology to the hair academies of Vidal Sassoon and Toni and Guy. He assisted at Moods Hair Salon before becoming one of its regular stylists and now 15 years later is the proud co-owner.

A constant learner, Taylor differentiates himself and the Mood stylists through international projects and training opportunities. "We always get involved in side projects to branch out and exercise our creativity. It's nice to mix up classic techniques within the salon with the creative techniques in show work." Getting involved in projects with local fashion designers and media brought opportunities to work with MTV Canada, Canada's Next Top Model and New York and Paris Fashion Week Taylor. His team has styled for shows such as Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier and Victoria's Secret. Awarded Canada's Top Stylist for 2010, Taylor remains modest about his success. "I've been fortunate to have great training and to work with many industry icons such as Guido Paulo, Damien Carney, Laurent Philippon and Orlando Pita."

Being part of the collaborative effort that goes into styling a show is what Taylor finds rewarding and inspiring. "I'm a creative person and I love to travel and enjoy music. There is a small part of me that is still into Sciences, yes, but I'm happy with the direction I chose in the end." When asked how Vancouver's hair scene compares to other cities, Taylor observes that cut and colour are definitely the priorities. "Vancouver is a lifestyle city so styling is not as common as maybe in Toronto, but I do see it evolving. People are becoming more interested in going to a salon to get hair styled for an occasion."
